Komatsu PC78US-10 Shoe Link Replacement

ご依頼背景

We received a call from a customer who was working on-site with a PC78US-10, saying, “During operation, it felt unstable, and there was looseness while traveling.” The shoe links were kinked and seized; however, there was still remaining life on the shoe plates, so we replaced only the shoe links, allowing us to handle the repair at a lower cost than replacing the entire shoe assembly.

As shown above, we always strive to propose cost-effective repair options for our customers, so please feel free to contact us even for minor concerns.

Repair Process Flow

1. Disassembly
First, we removed the surrounding components in order to remove the track links.

When removing the worn links, we proceeded carefully and took care not to damage other components.

2. Parts Replacement
We replaced the old links with new ones. Installing the new links eliminated the looseness and restored traveling performance. In addition, the movement at the replaced link section became smooth, ensuring it can be used without issues for the next job as well.

3. Test Run and Final Inspection
After the repair, we conducted a test run and confirmed there were no issues with traveling performance. The looseness seen previously was eliminated, enabling smooth operation.

Key Points of the Repair

  • Thorough inspection: We carefully inspect not only the replaced parts but also related components, with a focus on preventing recurrence.
  • Fast parts procurement: We arranged the parts with the shortest possible lead time and started the repair work immediately.
  • Test run: After the repair, we always perform a test run to confirm the machine has been fully restored.

For Those with Similar Concerns

If you are experiencing looseness or unstable movement while traveling, we recommend inspecting the track links and undercarriage. Performing repairs early can prevent further failures and improve work efficiency.

Guidelines for When to Replace Track Links

  • Guideline by operating hours
As a general guideline, 3,000–5,000 hours is one benchmark for replacement. However, this can vary significantly depending on usage and the work environment (rocky ground, sandy ground, paved roads, etc.).
  • Guideline by wear rate
If the pin/bush diameter or link height compared to when new shows 40–50% wear, it is time to consider replacement. Replacement is recommended once the values exceed the standard limits specified by the construction equipment manufacturer.
  • Guideline by abnormalities during travel
    • Does not travel straight (wanders)
    • Rattling abnormal noise while traveling
    • Large gaps between links (stepped wear)
If these symptoms appear, deterioration has progressed considerably.

Daily visual inspections are also extremely important.
